The building sexual tension between Dagny and Hank as the movie progressed was delicious. The only guy who I thought was totally miscast was Hugh Akston.

He needed to be at least 10 years older and distinguished looking with a nice head of gray hair. Also, I had feared that, as in movie, The Fountainhead , there would be too many long speeches. There were attempts to get the philosophy across, mainly successfully, but these were with one- or two-liners. And the villains were realistic hypocrites.
We would see them scheming to take advantage of the interventionist state while spouting all the standard lines about compassion. My own favorite, though, was Rearden Metal. The bracelet that Rearden gave his wife from the first pouring of the metal was similar to how I had pictured it. And the rail itself was so similar—especially its color—to how I had pictured it. My favorite segment in the novel was the maiden voyage on the John Galt Line. But it did pretty well. And the shimmering metal and the way the train snaked around the foothills and crossed the bridge were beautiful.
But it worked. Some conversations got going too. Maybe it was because at various points in the movie, he heard me laugh at some of the villains. I told him that if he liked the movie, he would like the book and, to give it some perspective, the book had changed my life. The characters in the movie version are flat and two dimensional because the characters in the books are flat and two dimensional. So you can say the movie at least is faithful to the source material.
But saying that you have to ask yourself will this movie create any converts? Based on the anecdotal evidence of my friends who have seen it — half of them were disappointed in the movie while the rest gave it average to good reviews. Where are you going after your degree? I have yet to view Atlas Shrugged. I am pleased you gave it a good review. My good friend, a devotee of Ayn Rand, gave it a Her novels espoused what came to be called Objectivism, a philosophy that champions capitalism and the pre-eminence of the individual. Conservative commentators Neal Boortz ,  Glenn Beck , and Rush Limbaugh  offered praise of the book on their respective radio and television programs. In , Republican Congressman Paul Ryan said that Rand was "the reason I got into public service", and he later required his staff members to read Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world.
The other, of course, involves orcs. References to Atlas Shrugged have appeared in a variety of other popular entertainments. In the first season of the drama series Mad Men , Bert Cooper urges Don Draper to read the book, and Don's sales pitch tactic to a client indicates he has been influenced by the strike plot: "If you don't appreciate my hard work, then I will take it away and we'll see how you do. In , it was announced that Galt's Gulch, Chile, a settlement for libertarian devotees named for John Galt's safe haven, would be established near Santiago , Chile ,  but the project collapsed amid accusations of fraud   and lawsuits filed by investors. A film adaptation of Atlas Shrugged was in " development hell " for nearly 40 years. Ruddy approached Rand to produce a cinematic adaptation.
Rand insisted on having final script approval, which Ruddy refused to give her, thus preventing a deal. Michael Jaffe hired screenwriter Stirling Silliphant to adapt the novel and he obtained approval from Rand on the final script. Rand, a former Hollywood screenwriter herself, began writing her own screenplay, but died in with only one-third of it finished.
